Gospel Music Presents: Great Performances
Archives

Shirley Caesar
With 150 concerts a year, 25 hours a week helping the poor in her Outreach Ministries, several Grammies, and 30 record albums to her credit, Shirley Caesar may seem to be a whole army of gospel singers instead of just one diminutive (5'1, 3/4") cherubic-looking woman. The "Queen of Gospel" packs a lot of wallop in her small frame. Backed by a sixty-person choir, rocking like a tempest, she is a bundle of fireworks on the Fourth of July. The gospel style of song and sermonette, singing that involves both the spoken word and dramatic acting, was developed primarily by Shirley Caesar. She journeys all over the world, sometimes traveling all night to return to her pulpit in Durham, North Carolina, the town where she was born. "It is not easy," said Shirley in her 1995 video He Will Come (Word Records), "In fact, sometimes it is downright mind-boggling. But, somehow, even though I'm wearing all of these hats, the Lord helps me to just barrel through it." Shirley has barreled through fifty years of touring and preaching, starting at age ten, and she continues to bring the house down every time she performs.

The Williams Brothers
As gospel groups go, few can equal the Williams Brothers in terms of longevity and popularity. The trio dates to 1960, when Leon "Pop" Williams founded the group. It has performed in some of the nation's more famous concert halls including: Madison Square Garden, The Apollo Theatre, The Grand Ole Opry, The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and The House of Blues.

The group, which includes Melvin Williams, Doug Williams, Henry Green, and members in the back-up band, is still traveling across the country, presenting its distinctive gospel sound to enthusiastic audiences.

Green, who joined the group when he was 18, said the Williams Brothers have placed God first in their efforts for nearly four decades, and have no regrets in doing so. "Down through the years, God has always blessed this group," Green said. "No matter what we do, we put God out in front, and when you put God out in front, there's no limit."

The Williams Brothers have three Grammy Award nominations and numerous Stellar Awards to their credit. In spite of the Williams Brothers' travels and success, the group continues to make music from its base in Mississippi.

The current Williams Brothers members can trace their own spiritual development to the guidance of their parents years ago, Green said. "It goes back to our roots, to our mothers and fathers," he said. "We grew up in the South, in the country. Back then, no matter what you did on Saturday night, no matter what movie you saw or how late you stayed out, you had to go to church on Sunday morning. There wasn't any 'I don't want to' or 'I don't like going to church.' You went to church, and not only did you go to church, your parents took you to church. And when you got to church, you acted right."

JJ Hairston
JJ Hairston is the Director of Youthful Praise. He is a member of Turner's Faith Temple C.O.G.I.C., Int'l. in Bridgeport CT under the leadership of two gospel music legends, Bishop J.C. White and Evangelist Gloria White.

JJ is a native of Brooklyn, NY, where he attended Mt. Sinai Cathedral, C.O.G.I.C. where his grandfather, Bishop Clarence Sexton Sr., was the Pastor. However, his love for gospel music began at his current church when his friend, Shawn Brown, asked him to come to choir rehearsal. It was then that James gave his heart, as well as his voice, talent, and his feet to the Lord. Inspired by the writing ability of his friend Shawn and his pastor, Bishop White, James began writing his own songs such as "He is the Spirit" and "Garment of Praise." Since then, James has been called upon to write and direct for many well-known artists.

To God be the Glory for such a talented young man. God has blessed and anointed JJ to put melody to his testimony, and the testimony of others. He is an admirer of the songwriting styles of Thomas Whitfield, Rudolph Stanfield, Richard Smallwood, Donald Lawrence, Kirk Franklin, James Hall, and Melvin Crispell. He also admires the directing styles of Ricky Dillard, and James Hall. JJ is well known for his exuberant style of directing and singing. You may even recognize him from the choir "James Hall and Worship & Praise" where he was a member for several years.

JJ's ultimate desire is that young people would see him as an active young man, yet as a servant of the Lord and realize you don't have to be old to be saved. Expect great things from this young man in days to come.

Youthful Praise
Generations have come and gone with young people singing for the Lord. Today, in our turbulent society, comes a group of young people doing something special, positive, creative and is a force to be reckoned with. Who says this is a lost generation? Certainly not with "YP" - better known as YOUTHFUL PRAISE. They are back on the scene with a brand new live CD in stores now.

They dynamic voices of Youthful Praise have been wowing audiences for over sixteen years. Formerly known as the Teens of T.F.T. they have grown within their home church of Turner's Faith Temple (Bridgeport, CT), into an effective ministry that dazzles and delights through the gift of song.

In August of 2001, after much anticipation, the choir released their first live recording Awesome God on Evidence Gospel label, a division of Gospelflava.com. The smash title single "Awesome God" caught on with church choirs nationwide and spread faster than anyone ever imagined. The song has been performed over and over, but none quite like the original, first recorded by YP.

This debut release garnered critical acclaim as it earned Youthful Praise recognition industry wide. Among the nods, the 2003 Stellar Award nominations for Choir of the Year and Contemporary Choir of the Year, the Soul Train Award nomination for Gospel Artist of the Year, the Gospel Music Workshop of America Excellence Award nomination for Choir of the Year and the Gospel Truth Magazine Award for Contemporary Choir of the Year.

Wess Morgan and Daryl Coley
"He Brought Me Out"

Wess Morgan…
Ordained minister, known by many for his unique ability to inspire and minister the word of God, is also nationally recognized as a truly gifted singer and songwriter. Wess & his wife Betsy serve as Associate Pastors in one of Nashville's most powerful and thriving multi-racial, interdenominational churches: Celebration of Life Church in Hendersonville, TN where Wess also serves as Praise and Worship Leader. The Morgan's and their two children live in a suburb of Nashville.

Daryl Coley
In the entire history of music, few vocalists have been able to merge the very best of so many musical genres into a cohesive artistic vision. As a nationally renowned recording artist for more than twenty years, Daryl Coley's ability to do that effortlessly, while remaining true to the message of the church he loves, has made him one of the most unique and celebrated artists of our age. A native of California, Coley was born in Berkley in 1955 and raised in Oakland, where he spent the bulk of his developmental years influenced equally by his upbringing in the African-American church and his vocalist mother's love for Gospel, classical and jazz music. His teenage years were filled with vocal and instrumental training in school bands and regional choirs, and by the time he entered college his talent as a singer and keyboardist was widely recognized. ??In 1977, Coley's unique musical presence earned him the opportunity to perform with the legendary Hawkins Family. As a singer with Edwin Hawkins and later a songwriter and musical director for Tramaine Hawkins, Coley began to establish a name for himself on a national level. Lead vocal appearances on several high profile albums with Hawkins family and with James Cleveland's Gospel Music Workshop of America, led to Coley's solo debut, JUST DARYL, in 1985. The string of award nominations and chart-topping albums has never ceased. ??Daryl Coley has worked with some of the music industry's most talented artists such as Stevie Wonder, Ramsey Lewis, Nancy Wilson, Richard Smallwood, Sylvester and Philip Bailey. He has recorded a landmark collection of more than 100 studio performances, yet his greatest impact in the Gospel marketplace has always been the strength of his live performances. With a simple inflection, a slight change of rhythm, a split-second decision to emote with great passion or retreat into a pocket of vocal coolness, he captures the spirit of music and lyric. In a live performance Daryl Coley is entirely in his element, intuitively sensing the pulse of any audience. His consistent artistry in maximizing the concert moment remains unrivaled.

Darwin Hobbs
"He's Able"

Hobbs launched his debut solo CD Mercy in 1999. He followed with the best-selling Vertical project in 2001. It featured the gospel smash "Everday" with Michael McDonald and his stunning gospel rendition of "So Amazing". Hobbs' prior collection Broken, was his highest charting project to date, peaking at #3 on the Billboard gospel sales chart in 2003. Since the start of his career, Hobbs' voice has often been compared to that of the late Luther Vandross. When asked if the comparison offends him Hobbs answered "In my short lifetime so far, I've never heard anybody else be compared to "Luther", so actually I see it as a huge compliment!" Hobbs never had the occasion of meeting Luther Vandross, but says he did speak with him over the phone once while Luther was in Atlanta promoting a CD on the "Frank Ski Morning Show". According to Hobbs "Luther was very complimentary and even sang to me over the phone. He said he was honored that I recorded "So Amazing" and invited me to dinner during my next visit to New York City." Unfortunately, Luther passed away before the two could build upon what started in that conversation.

Howard Hewett
"Oh Holy Night"
A ccording to one Rolling Stone writer, Howard Hewett is the premier vocalist in the post Marvin Gaye era of romantic pop. Like Gaye, Hewett soars to new heights and seduces his audience. "Just as I believe that I can't compromise romance," says Hewett "I can't compromise my music. I want songs like 'This Love's Forever,' 'On and On' and 'Your Body Needs Healing' to disclose secrets about myself and expose my heart.
Hewett first burst on the scene as lead singer of Shalamar, the successful post - disco group which topped the charts in both the U.S. and U. K. In the mid-eighties, Howard's solo career rocketed. The first single released on his own, I'm For Real," zoomed to number one. A series of hits followed, such as "Stay," "I Commit to Love," "Strange Relationship," "Once, Twice, Three Times," and "Show Me." His tune "Say Amen" has earned the status of a modern gospel classic.

Beverly Crawford
"Silent Night"
A Dove, Stellar, and Grammy nominee, this licensed and ordained Evangelist has been touching the lives of God’s people for over 17 years.
Ministry is a way of life for Beverly Crawford. A native of Gainesville, Florida, she began singing at the age of three. As a young child she joined her musical siblings singing at the church pastored by their father, Walter Camp.
"I used to sing in our front yard with a stick in my hand as a microphone," she recalls, laughing. "I would imagine the grass was my audience and in my mind I could hear people clapping."
Today, Beverly Crawford maintains a grueling tour schedule that sees her perform more than 200 concerts a year. What fuels this drive is her heart for ministry. During concerts, she says, "my prayer is to touch lives. That's what I'm all about. When people walk in, my hope is they will never be the same again."

Daryl Coley
"Oh Come All Ye Faithful"
IMAGINE THIS: One voice with the gut-wrenching emotion of a blues singer, the improvisational gift of a jazz vocalist, the range and control of a classical tenor and the strength of spirit of a Gospel soloist.
Coley has recorded a landmark collection of studio performances, yet his greatest impact in the Gospel marketplace has always been the strength of his live performances.

Jonathan Butler
"The First Noel"
At thirteen, Jonathan's talents caught the ears and eyes of British record producer Clive Caulder. He was signed to Caulder's Jive Records and as the old cliche goes, the rest is history. Jonathan's first single broke down racial barriers, becoming the first song by a black artist to be played by white radio stations in South Africa and earned a Sarie Award, South Africa's equivalent to the Grammys. Because Jive was headquartered in England, Jonathan decided to move there to focus on his recording career. His commitment to his craft paid off with his self-titled debut album, which received a Grammy nomination for the pop hit "Lies." Jonathan's ability to blend his roots in African music with western pop sensibilities would be a trademark of many albums to follow.

Shirley Murdock
"Hark The Herald"
As a chart-topping solo artist and songwriter, under the auspices of electro-funk pioneer, Roger Troutman (a/k/a “Roger”), and sometimes-singer with his hit-making band Zapp, Shirley is rightly credited as one of the defining influences in modern R&B.
Shirley grew up in a solid, church-going family in Toledo, Ohio. Having given her life to the Lord when she was 15, gospel music was the soundtrack to her life as a child and young adult. Showing prodigious musical gifts all her life, and growing up singing in her church choir, Shirley dreamed from a young age of a career as a gospel singer. “I want to sing songs that will help people in their everyday lives,” says Shirley. “To take them the Good News of Christ right where they are in ways that make them feel drawn in, welcomed and loved by God. Lifting up and giving encouragement to the church is a vitally important thing to do, and I hope I’m accomplishing that. But it’s all the people on the outside of the church doors who are lost, and slowly dying spiritually, and who don’t know where to turn or what to do, that I feel a special calling to reach. If my name gets someone’s attention, then well and good, because I have something to give them now that’s so much better than I ever have before.”

“When you love music as much as I do, then you love all forms of music and because I minister in song, and listen to everything, I’ll leave it up to the listener as to how to classify my style. But believe me when I tell you that it all comes straight from my heart,” says Bridgjette
Bridgjette's first CD, which was recently released, is more than a compilation of songs - The self titles CD is the symphonic story of a journey through life.  It can be referred to as the gospel in “real time”.  This freshman project will be enjoyed by any and every one who has the desire to succeed in life despite insurmountable odds.
